Common Basketball Shots

Basketball is a whole lot more than just knowing how to play the game. What the game needs today is ability and strength as well as knowing how to balance the physical advantages with mental focus. What began as a game that was played indoors with two peach baskets is today one of the most keenly contested games of skills and has created some of the best known and loved sportsmen.

Letstake a look at the basics of the game. The skill you really need to perfect in this game are your shooting skills. Heresan overview of the many different types of shooting you'll find in basketball.

Probably the most basic one is the Layup and every player will just have to learn this. This happens when a player is underneath the ring and he gets the ball which he tries to get through to the basket. It can also occur when the player dribbles his way to the area underneath the basket.

Then comes the onehanded underhand which needs a lot of skill to do. The problem is that it cannot be used in a set position.

The onehanded set is also one of the basic skills that every basketball player has to learn and it makes for a lot of speed when you shoot the ball.

The twohanded set you'll find is used when you have long range shots. It used to be very popular in the years gone by and a lot of todaysplayers don't use it. Bob McDermott was really the greatest player to use this and it is said he could shoot from any place on the court.

The Jump Shot usually ends up making a score and is very often combined with a fake. Many players use this no matter at what level they play.

The Hook Shot is used in the midrange and shortrange and it can be combined with many other moves which makes it very versatile.

Then comes the Free Throw Shot which is really the traditional shot in the game. Players perform this shot when fouled. There should be at least an 80% proficiency in order to be effective.

There are many more shooting styles but these really are the main ones. Most of the others are variations of these and of course any shot can become unique depending on how good a player is to take a shot and make it his own. To perfect these shots, you do need a lot of training.

Of course the shots are just part of the game of basketball but a very important part. Basketball players spend a lot of practice time perfecting their shots since the ability to sink a shot can make or break the game.
